FAQ

Q: Why Does my piano go out of tune?
A: The primary reason is changes in humidity from season to season, regardless of where you live.
Other contributing factors are:  temperature, moving the piano, slipping tuning pins, loud and frequent playing, and new strings.  A piano in a recording studio, played continuously, is tuned at least 4 times a week.  A concert piano is tuned before every performance.

Q: How often should my piano be tuned?
A: Manufacturers recommend that a new piano be tuned 4 times during the first year and twice a year thereafter.

Q: What if I have not had my piano tuned in several years?
A:  Your piano will likely require a pitch correction.  When your piano is not tuned routinely, the strings lose tension.  The sound becomes dull and muddled.  The piano technician cannot bring the pitch back to normal in one tuning without breaking the strings.  Therefore, the technician does two to three tunings in a session, each time pulling the strings tighter and tigher until the pitch is corrected.

Q: How much does a pitch correction cost?
A: Usually it is twice the cost of a tuning.  But the more important question is what is the cost if I don't have my piano tuned frequently?  Eventually, deterioration will not only affect the sound of the piano but your wallet as well.  The cost of repair is almost always greater than the cost of maintenance.
